Join us in Valdivia for a hands on learning journey in water. Together we will create a rainwater
catchment system in a beautiful forest
Students will participate in a variety of hands on and theoretical exercises that will teach them to create an integrated water storage system.
Topics Covered
* Introduction to Permaculture Water Storage 101 - Pros and Cons of the various storage methods.
* Choosing the appropriate storage system for your location. How to maintain water quality.
* Calculations of water harvesting. Water filtration systems and emergency water catchment. * Site Analysis and Preparation: How to choose the best site for your storage.
* Storing water in the land. How to make swales and ponds
* Construction of the Thai jar ferocement tank.
Duration: Feb 3 - Feb 24 2011. Cost: 48,000 Chilean pesos for the month (approximately 100 USD) Two week rate available.
Includes: Camping accommodation and food. El Pudu Permaculture Project, just 20 minutes from Valdivia.
What to expect: An extraordinary experience with the land in a rustic forest wonderland. For those who complete the entire experience, they will walk away the tools to construct their own water system. This is a collaborative experience that requires a commitment to sustainability, permaculture principles and community respect. Participants will be expected to work in groups to organize the various aspects of course needs such as cleaning and cooking.
About the Instructors:
Viella Shipley
Viella often says, "I was practicing permacuture before I knew the word permaculture exisited. What a relief to learn of the movement and the incredible energy that is within." She earned her Permaculture Design Certificate from the Permaculture Research Institute the in Australia under the tutelage of Geoff Lawton and Rosemary Morrow. She has also been active in the U.S. permaculture movement. She spent years in the San Francisco Bay area where she practiced natural building, mushroom cultivation and permaculture. Professionally she was the Director of Marketing for one of the first certification agencies in the USA, California Certified Organic Farmers. Later she direct Permaculture Educational Programs at the Camassia Institute for Sustainable Studies located in the renown Lost Valley Eco Village. Currently she transforming Airesbuenos Hostel y Permaculture into an urban permaculture demonstration center.
Claudio Gamero Henríquez
Master in Management la Pontificia University Católica de Valparaíso. Between 2000 and 2005 has been working as process auditor and consulting with a number of companies. Entrepreneur always and founder of RELMU consultants along with other engineers from Valpariso. Their orientation is on energy efficiency and software. In 2003 he began his dream to rediscover the wisdom and instruments of the aborigines of the South America, principally Mapuche and Kawaskar. Since 2005 he has been teaching at the University Técnica Federico Santa María casa central and the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso.In 2006 he began researching permacultura and has directed various projects. He is a member of the Chilean Ecological Party. Currently he is working at the UTFSM in apprecation of intangibles and social knowledge.
